The History of Melittaklinik

The Beginning

The story of Melittaklinik began in 1960 with the founding of the Dr Waldner Clinic in Bolzano. A private healthcare facility with 20 inpatient beds, it quickly distinguished itself through its modern and well-organised approach, offering specialist medical care in a discreet and welcoming environment.

Growth and Consolidation

A commitment to modernisation marked this period. Architect Alberto Lucich was commissioned to oversee the clinic’s first major renovation project, reflecting the ambition to align the facility with the most advanced healthcare standards of the time.

Expansion and Development

Additional inpatient beds, rehabilitation therapy facilities and radiology diagnostic services strengthened the clinic’s position as a leading centre for rehabilitation and specialist care. Throughout the 1990s, Villa Melitta experienced significant growth, expanding its departments, services and medical expertise.

Innovation Looking to the Future

At the beginning of the new millennium, the Waldner brothers assumed ownership of the clinic and launched a new phase focused on research and development in the field of rehabilitation medicine.

Collaborations with Universities and Research Institutions

From 2000 onwards, Melittaklinik established a series of strategic collaborations with universities and research institutions. Scientific publications in international journals increased significantly, while efforts to strengthen expertise in rehabilitation medicine continued to expand.

Innovation became a defining characteristic of the clinic. Through the introduction of increasingly advanced clinical protocols and a constant commitment to quality of care, Melittaklinik continued its path of growth and development.

Over the years, the clinic has built a network of collaborations with nationally and internationally recognised institutions and research centres, including the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Verona, Charité University Hospital Berlin, the Department of Neuropsychology at the Max Planck Institute in Munich, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Innsbruck, Harvard University in Boston, Eurac Research, Fraunhofer Italia Research and FH Kärnten.

Since 2011, Melittaklinik has been an official partner of the University of Verona and an accredited training centre for specialist physicians in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine.

The New Clinic

Construction began on a new facility designed to combine medical efficiency, sustainability and patient comfort.

Every aspect of the new clinic was carefully planned and developed based on decades of clinical experience, creating a healthcare environment tailored to the evolving needs of patients and healthcare professionals alike.

This Is Melittaklinik

The new facility—renamed Melittaklinik and no longer operating under the name Villa Melitta Nursing Home—was officially inaugurated among the orchards of Bolzano.

Bright and spacious interiors, state-of-the-art technology and carefully designed patient pathways create an environment that resembles a modern centre for care and well-being rather than a traditional hospital, offering comfort, accessibility and a welcoming atmosphere.
