Lipedema is a chronic and progressive condition that, by impairing mobility, profoundly affects quality of life because it significantly alters body perception.

The Melittaklinik Lipedema Center offers a comprehensive and highly professional approach that combines expertise with the sensitivity needed to address the disease from a human as well as clinical perspective. The care pathway we propose is based on solid scientific evidence, constantly updated techniques and a real closeness to patients’ needs.

The high profile of our method is combined with an integrated approach

Every clinical aspect of patients is considered to address lipedema in the most complete way in order to build an effective therapeutic path. The elements involved in this disease are diverse: adipose tissue, chronic pain, fatigue, psychological distress and reduced mobility.
The Melittaklinik Lipedema Center includes multidisciplinary specialists to evaluate treatments based on the unique characteristics of each patient. Plastic surgeons specialized in treating lipedema, physiatrists, physiotherapists specialized in manual lymph drainage and nutritionists form a team that operates discreetly to offer calm and well-being throughout the care process.

Why choose Melittaklinik

Our clinic treats patients, not the disease: this translates into attention to individual needs to propose personalized care pathways in which every choice results from collaboration between specialists and the patient. An accurate and timely diagnosis is essential to approach lipedema and not confuse it with other conditions.
The Melittaklinik Lipedema Center has specialized and gained significant experience to recognize and correctly frame the situation from the first visit. Lipedema progresses through different stages ranging from a slight increase in adipose tissue to severe deformities and functional limitations. Our professionals have identified three well-defined stages in order to develop the most appropriate therapeutic path for each. Surgical treatment is performed using innovative, state-of-the-art techniques such as vibration-assisted liposuction (PAL) which, respecting and preserving tissues, removes pathological fat safely, significantly reducing pain and improving joint function.

Postoperative physiotherapy is entrusted to specialists who make the treatment a positive and valuable experience, useful for improving well-being, regaining mobility and confidence in one’s body.

Clear information, continuous assistance and support to successfully overcome lipedema

Four phases for a complete treatment

A complex condition is addressed with a structured service

Treatment of lipedema within our specialized center in Bolzano is organized into a structured and multidimensional pathway in which, in addition to clinical specifics, each patient’s functional and emotional variables contribute to creating an individual plan.
This process consists of four distinct but well-integrated phases that accompany each patient with care and continuity toward treatment. The initial specialist consultation is the first meeting that establishes, with precision and instrumental analysis when necessary, the diagnosis. Lipedema can often be confused with lymphedema, obesity or venous insufficiency. In this phase the type of disease and stage are determined.

Conservative therapies
Conservative therapies have the primary function of relieving symptoms. Once lipedema is diagnosed, treatments such as compression therapy and manual lymphatic drainage slow disease progression while alleviating symptoms, although they do not offer a permanent solution.

Surgery
Liposuction is the surgical procedure that, when necessary, can definitively address pain. In our center we perform procedures such as vibration-assisted liposuction (PAL), based on a minimally invasive technique that removes pathological adipose tissue without impacting the lymphatic system and promotes faster healing.

A comprehensive therapeutic pathway to regain harmony and freedom

Postoperative support
In the postoperative phase, we offer comprehensive assistance programs ranging from physiotherapy support to nutritional counseling. We also provide multi-day (three-day) rehabilitation packages for more extensive surgeries, to ensure the necessary support for a full recovery.

Post-aesthetic treatment
Our approach includes a fourth phase dedicated to post-aesthetic care where the goal is to make the surgical result even more effective and long-lasting. This consists of a set of treatments based on modern and gentle methods that focus on removing excess skin while simultaneously providing firming action.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Interview with Dr. Christoph Möbius

The typical symptoms of lipedema are:

  • Increased adipose tissue on the legs and/or arms
  • Painful pressure
  • Sensation of tightness in the affected areas
  • Tendency to bruise easily
  • Swelling, especially after prolonged standing or in hot conditions.

Diagnosis is usually made through a physical examination during which symmetrical fat increase and pressure sensitivity are determined. The physician may also perform specific tests, such as the thumb test, to differentiate lipedema from other conditions like lymphedema.

There are two types of therapeutic options:

Conservative therapies: Compression therapy, manual lymphatic drainage and exercise therapy.
Surgical therapy: liposuction is the only method to permanently reduce excess adipose tissue.

Lipedema cannot be cured, but it can be treated. Symptoms can be relieved with appropriate therapies, particularly surgical procedures such as liposuction.

Patients can relieve symptoms by doing regular exercise, wearing compression stockings and following a balanced diet. Manual lymphatic drainage can also be helpful.

Painkillers can be used to relieve pain, and conservative therapies such as drainage or physiotherapy can help reduce symptoms.

Lipedema can have both physical and psychological effects, including limitations in mobility and reduced self-esteem. Support from specialist doctors and self-help groups can be useful.

Before visiting the doctor, patients should document their symptoms and prepare a list of questions. It is also helpful to have information about their medical history on hand.
