Kinaesthetics in care

E.C.M. courses (BASIC and ADVANCED) on kinaesthetic methodologies promoted by MELITTAKLINIK SRL ACADEMY in collaboration with Peter Zingerle, partner Kinaesthetics Italia

This programme thematises the development of movement competence within a professional caregiving or therapeutic engagement towards other people. It is applied in elderly care, in hospitals, in professional home care, in rehabilitation settings or in disability contexts. People experience themselves as ill or disabled when they can no longer carry out independently the movements that underpin their daily activities. A central task of those providing care or therapy is to support the user in activities of daily living. Carrying out this work in a way that promotes the health development of all involved is a major challenge.

Kinaesthetics starts from the assumption that supporting people who need assistance in activities of daily living (e.g. sitting, eating, standing up) is helpful when they can make the most of their movement competence, maintain it or expand it. In this way they develop more of their own activity and become mobile more quickly. They do not perceive themselves as an object being treated because of their “defect”, but perceive themselves as effective in relation to their health process.

In these courses participants learn not to manipulate people in need of care as if they were objects, but to support them in their movement through their own movement competence so as to promote learning and health. At the same time they learn to reduce risks to their own health caused by the work.

The basic course, totalling 24 hours, introduces participants to the six fundamental concepts of Kinaesthetics. These concepts include interaction through contact and movement, weight control in the force of gravity, the potential of movement patterns, supporting autonomy and effectiveness, understanding daily activities and utilising and organising the environment. The aims of the course are to let participants experience and understand the concepts, link movement quality to health development and develop practical ideas to increase patients’ autonomy and reduce risks for caregivers.

The advanced/refinement course, also 24 hours in total, builds on the learning process of the basic course. It deepens the understanding of the concepts of Kinaesthetics, focusing on the significance of movement competence for learning and health processes. Participants learn to purposefully organise support for daily activities as learning situations. The course includes analysis of daily activities, expanding movement competence, autonomy and behaviour regulation.

Both courses use a methodology that combines individual experiences, partner exercises, practical applications, planning for autonomous learning and documentation of the learning process. Attendance is mandatory (at least 80% of total hours) to take the final test and obtain the basic or advanced course certificate. Furthermore, the basic course certificate is a prerequisite for attending the advanced peer-tutoring course or a Kinaesthetics level 1 teacher training. The course entitles participants to E.C.M. credits.
